The stricken seahawks didn’t need this. Geno smith is out injured once more, and seattle (6-6) will begin the season on sunday against san francisco (9-3), in an attempt to snap a three-game losing streak.
Smith is considered a candidate for the nfc west game by the seahawks due to a new groin injury. In practice friday, the last full workout before the game, backup drew lock ran the first-team offense. Smith didn’t participate at all, according to coach pete carroll after practice. “he just tweaked his groin a little bit. Carroll told reporters at team headquarters in renton that he “just kind of stumbled over someone.” When asked if smith would play on sunday, the coach said: “we’ll see.” Today, we rested him.
Lock has appeared in two games this season, the new york giants and los angeles rams, respectively. Smith played both games in the same league before returning. Lock, the former denver broncos starter seattle acquired in the spring of 2022 as part of a russell wilson trade, completed 2 of 6 passes in each of those two cameo appearances this season. Lock will make his first appearance in seattle in two seasons. Carroll made it possible. Carroll said, “he’s been waiting for this opportunity. If this happens, he is as prepared as he says.
The seahawks also signed veteran quarterback sean mannion to the practice squad on friday, highlighting smith’s concerns. To be able to serve as lock’s backup in sunday’s game, the seahawks will need to remove mannion from the practice squad by saturday 1 p.m.
