Bruce Boudreau Announces Retirement Following 2023-24 NHL Season

Veteran NHL coach Bruce Boudreau, one of the league’s most charismatic and successful bench bosses, has announced that the 2023-24 season will be his final year behind the bench. After nearly two decades as a head coach, Boudreau, 69, will retire at the conclusion of the season, marking the end of an illustrious coaching career that spanned multiple teams and left an indelible mark on the NHL.

In a heartfelt press conference, Boudreau shared his decision with the media and fans. “I’ve had an incredible journey in this game, and I’m so fortunate to have worked with amazing players, teams, and organizations. But the time has come to step away and spend more time with my family,” Boudreau said. “I’ll miss being part of this great sport, but I’m looking forward to what’s next.”

Boudreau has coached over 1,000 NHL games with various teams, including the Washington Capitals, Anaheim Ducks, Minnesota Wild, and Vancouver Canucks. He is widely respected for his ability to turn struggling teams into contenders, known for his quick wit, passionate style, and offensive-minded systems that consistently produced high-scoring teams.

His first major success came in 2007 when he took over the Washington Capitals midseason and led them to an improbable playoff berth. Under his leadership, the Capitals became one of the most dominant regular-season teams, culminating in winning the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s coach of the year in 2008.

Boudreau went on to enjoy further success with the Anaheim Ducks, where he won four consecutive division titles and consistently guided his teams to the playoffs. Despite his teams’ regular-season prowess, the one thing that eluded him was the Stanley Cup, though his teams always remained competitive.

Current players and former colleagues alike expressed admiration for Boudreau’s career. Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf, who played under Boudreau for several seasons, praised him for his leadership and approachability. “Bruce is one of the best coaches I’ve had the privilege to play for. He’s got such a great hockey mind, but more importantly, he cares about his players. It’s been an honor to be part of his journey,” Getzlaf said.
