Manchester City won the Club World Cup in Jeddah on Friday night, beating Fluminense 4-0. Pep Guardiola’s side qualified for the tournament in June thanks to victory against Inter in the Champions League final, then beat Urawa Red Diamonds 3-0 in the semi-final on Tuesday to book their place in the final.
Julian Alvarez gave them the lead within a minute against their Brazilian opponents and they never lost control of the match. Phil Foden saw the effort turn for the team and scored the second goal, then converted Alvarezand’s cross in the second half to give City and the win before Alvarez slotted home the fourth late on. Here are some talking points about the fun game.
The Club World Cup didn’t exactly get the best promotion this week and from next year it will become a bloated tournament fattening the wallets of clubs and organizations that really don’t need more money.
However, it’s still an honor to say you’ve beaten the rest of the world, an opportunity few footballers on the planet can witness, even if Mateo Kovacic is now doing it for the fifth time.
