How a Burger Cost Van Morrison a Movie Role in The Commitments
Music legend Van Morrison could have added “movie star” to his long list of achievements if not for an untimely craving for a burger.
According to film insiders, Morrison was the top choice to appear in the 1991 cult classic The Commitments, Alan Parker’s much-loved musical comedy about a group of working-class Dubliners forming a soul band. But fate and fast food had other plans.
The story goes that Morrison was scheduled to meet with Parker to discuss a part in the film. However, when the director arrived at the meeting spot, the Northern Irish singer was nowhere to be seen. Later, it was revealed that Morrison had wandered off to grab a burger and never returned in time for the crucial conversation.
The missed meeting ultimately cost him the role, and the part went to another actor. Though The Commitments went on to become a massive hit, earning global acclaim and a loyal fan base, Morrison’s name was absent from the credits.
While Van Morrison has never spoken publicly about the incident, fans often wonder what the film might have looked and sounded like with his unmistakable voice and stage presence.
One thing’s for sure: it’s a tasty piece of music and movie trivia that proves sometimes, the smallest decisions can have the biggest consequences.
