JJ Redick Calls Out Lakers’ ‘Out of Character’ Play in Loss to Celtics: ‘I Think That Contributed…’
The Los Angeles Lakers’ highly anticipated matchup against the Boston Celtics ended in disappointment as they fell short in a 116-105 loss. Following the game, former NBA sharpshooter and analyst JJ Redick shared his take on what went wrong, pointing out that the Lakers did something “out of character,” which he believes played a role in their defeat.
Speaking on ESPN’s First Take, Redick analyzed how the Lakers deviated from their usual style, particularly on the defensive end and in their offensive decision-making. “The Lakers have been a team that thrives in transition, using their size and physicality to control the pace,” Redick explained. “But against Boston, they played at a slower tempo, settled for too many jumpers, and got away from what makes them effective.”
One of the key issues Redick highlighted was the Lakers’ lack of defensive intensity. Typically known for their physical play and ability to disrupt opponents, they allowed the Celtics too many open looks and second-chance opportunities. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown took full advantage, combining for 55 points as Boston dictated the pace of the game.
“I think that contributed to their struggles,” Redick continued. “When the Lakers aren’t playing with energy and aggression, especially on defense, they put themselves in a tough position. Boston took them out of their rhythm, and they never really adjusted.”
The Lakers also faced issues with their half-court offense, a problem that has plagued them throughout the season. LeBron James and Anthony Davis did their best to keep the team competitive, but the supporting cast struggled to knock down shots when it mattered most.
While Redick’s criticism highlights a concerning trend, the Lakers still have time to make adjustments. With the playoff race heating up, they’ll need to regain their identity and avoid falling into bad habits if they want to remain contenders in the West.
Will the Lakers bounce back from this loss and prove Redick wrong? Or is this a sign of deeper issues within the team? Time will tell.
